Scrap yards at Kavlem up and running again

Ponda: Despite some being gutted in a massive fire two years ago and others being demolished by govt authorities, scrap yards at Dhavali in Ponda taluka’s Kavlem area have resurrected.Following complaints by local residents, the Kavlem panchayat inspected the area on Wednesday.Terming them as ticking bombs, the villagers demanded swift action against the illegal scrap yards.Around two years ago, some had been gutted in massive fires, while seven were demolished by govt authorities. The fire incident had even paralysed traffic movement on the Dhavali-Ponda highway as the thick smoke emanating from the burning scrap — including plastic and rubbers — hindered visibility.Local residents have demanded that the panchayat demolish all scrap yards that have been set up in the area.
