MARGAO

: Director of education

Vandana Rao

said on Thursday that the increasing inclination of schools towards

English

has led to local languages "lagging behind", resulting in children missing out on the rich local flavour of

Indian languages

.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the third edition of

Bal Sahitya Parishad

held at

Ravindra Bhavan

, Margao, Rao stressed on the importance of having a library in every school in order to foster the reading habit among children. She further said that drama, music and literature shape the personality of a person.

Noted writer from Lucknow, Naresh Saxena, while delivering the key note address, said that while it was imperative to learn the English language, ‘knowledge can only be obtained through one’s mother tongue’.

Sessions on various aspects of children’s literature are being held during the two-day Parishad.

A special presentation of the best of children’s literature will also be held during the conference. Deliberations at the conference on Thursday centred around the latest trends in children’s literature. Renowned personalities from the field of literature are attending the conference organised in collaboration with Konkani Bhasha Mandal.
