Sarzora locals oppose proposed railway station
Margao: In a special gram sabha on Sunday, residents of Sarzora village unanimously resolved to oppose Konkan Railways’ plans to establish a new station in their community.
The proposed station, part of Konkan Railways’ recently announced three-station expansion project in Goa, has drawn significant backlash from locals concerned about its impact on their agro-based community. The proposed project would see new stations constructed at Sarzora, Neura, and Mayem over the next three years.
During the meeting, villagers emphasised Sarzora’s status as an agricultural hub, pointing to its vast rice fields, coconut plantations, and the ecologically sensitive Sarzora lake, which was officially designated as a wetland by the Goa State Wetland Authority.
Gram sabha members expressed frustration over the lack of public consultation before the announcement by govt and the railways.
Local MLA Cruz Silva pledged support for the villagers’ cause.
Konkan Railways stated that the proposed station is intended to decongest Margao railway station as several mail and express trains will originate and terminate at the proposed new station.
