Santa Cruz VP shuts down 'polluting' garage

SANTA CRUZ: The Santa Cruz panchayat gram sabha adopted a resolution to shut down a garage in Calapur, Santa Cruz, that was apparently polluting the area.
"The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had ordered that the garage be closed down. The sarpanch has to comply with the order by sending a notice to the garage owner and a reply to the GSPCB letter," said Reggie Gomes, secretary of the Santa Cruz Education and Action Movement (SCREAM).
Gram sabha members also demanded that the minutes of the gram sabha meetings be recorded directly on the minutes book by the panchayat secretary instead of being written on loose sheets of paper and then transferred to the minutes book.
This was after villagers discovered that there were discrepancies and alterations in the minutes of the previous gram sabha meetings.
