Sanguem sees protest over bad road

Quepem: Two opposition councillors from the

Sanguem

Municipal Council along with locals blocked the Curchorem-Sanguem

road

at Sanguem town on Tuesday in protest against PWDs failures to repair the two kilometre stretch following laying of a new water pipeline. Traffic was disrupted for around 30 minutes.

The situation became tense when Sanguem police tried to move both the councillors — Meshu D’Costa and Sangameshwar Naik — off the road to allow traffic movement to resume. The councillors, however, remained adamant and demanded the presence of PWD officials at the site.

D’Costa and Naik later withdrew their agitation after PWD executive engineer M U Jamadar arrived at the site and assured that the entire damaged stretch would be concretised within 15 days.

The protesters issued the PWD a 15-day ultimatum within which if the damaged stretch is not concretised they have threatened to block the road again.

“The

bad

condition of the road was brought to the notice of the authorities on many occasions, but the authorities are not bothered,” Naik said.

D’Costa blamed the PWD for digging the road to lay the new pipeline just before the monsoon. “The tender was issued in December, but the work commenced in April,” D’Costa said.
