Residents protest over sewage discharge at Vaddem

Vasco: Mundvel-Vaddem residents confronted the assistant engineer of the sewerage section Varad Surlakar over alleged raw sewage discharge into the nullah near Goa Shipyard Limited at Vaddem. A large crowd marched to the Vaddem sewage pumping station on Wednesday morning.

Agitated residents noticed raw sewage discharge from the pumping station into the nullah, causing a foul smell and health hazard.

“Despite resident complaints, PWD failed to upgrade the sewage pumping station. We request Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and PWD to upgrade it to avoid sewage polluting the water,” said a Mundvel-Vaddem resident.

Salkar heard the people’s grievances and assured a swift resolution of the issue.

“PWD is upgrading the sewerage pumping station through the Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd. Due to a power failure at Maimollem on Tuesday night, raw sewerage overflowed from the sewerage pumping station at Mundvel-Vaddem to the nullah, causing inconvenience to residents,” said Surlakar.

He said it was unintentional and the sewerage station staff were not at fault. Measures will be taken to set things right, and people should cooperate with the authorities for a long-term solution.
