Porvorim road caves in, leads to traffic congestion

Panaji: During the ongoing construction work of the six-lane elevated highway at Porvorim, a portion of the road caved in near the Nexa showroom on Saturday morning. Work of drilling was on when the damage occurred. After the cave-in, traffic was diverted onto the new four-lane road created in Porvorim.
However, the closure of the main road led to traffic congestion, despite the low movement of traffic on Saturday. Traffic jam was seen in Porvorim throughout the day as a result.
The work of repairing the caved-in road began immediately and it was on till Saturday night. During this time, to prevent any untoward incident, vehicular traffic proceeding towards Mapusa on the Panaji-Porvorim side was diverted at O’Coqueiro junction to proceed via Chogm Road and further through the newly constructed road opposite Wellness pharmacy to reach the old Porvorim bazaar slope on NH 66.
“Traffic police are deployed for traffic regulation at all the major intersections and for guidance of motorists,” said SP traffic.
However, locals said that on the highway from the old Porvorim bazaar point to the O’Coqueiro junction, there is very narrow space available now for vehicles to pass as a result of the elevated corridor work.
“The work intensifies at night and there is water spilling across the road too due to the work. This causes dangerous conditions for motorists,” said a local.
