Ponda: In the run-up to the monsoons, all governing bodies are bracing for a tidy monsoon and trying to finish desilting of all drains. Ponda municipal council which has also commenced the pre-monsoon exercise of cleaning clogged nullahs and pruning overgrown trees, has been getting additional help from citizens.

Priya Priolkar, a resident, said that pre-monsoon works are yet to commence in her ward. She added that cleanliness drives were being undertaken by two citizens' groups - People for Ponda and Ami Fondekar - in the town along with assistance from PMC councillors and local volunteers. "Banners seeking citizens' cooperation in the cleanliness drive have been erected all over the city," she stated.

Dada Vaidya chowk next to Public cafe hotel and Lolitkar petrol pump are areas where water logging problems occur every monsoon, said a Ponda-based businessman, on condition of anonymity. He added that the municipal council's pre-monsoon works had started on April 22.

PMC chairperson Radhika Nayak said, "Ponda is well prepared to face the monsoon. We had begun the pre-monsoon work in a systematic manner during the first week of March, which has reached completion. There are two groups, headed by supervisors, working simultaneously. Minor repairs of the retaining wall near the gutters have also been undertaken. So we are ready for the monsoon."

On the annual tree-pruning exercise, Nayak added, "We have an efficient electricity department headed by executive engineer D P Singh, who does his work on time and the department coordinates very well with the PMC. The vexed problem of waterlogging previously witnessed near Dada Vaidya chowk has been taken care of now and is no longer a problem. During my earlier tenure as PMC chairperson 10 years ago, it was a major hassle but not any more."
