Police suspect Irani gang in Raia mangalsutra theft
Margao: The Maina Curtorim police investigating Wednesday’s mangalsutra snatching case at Tembi, Raia, are focusing on the notorious Irani gang as prime suspects. Despite intensive efforts, investigators are yet to make a breakthrough in identifying the culprits who snatched the mangalsutra from the bank employee.
“The Irani gang is notorious for such chain-snatching incidents,” said a senior officer. “They operate with a distinct pattern—committing a series of thefts, then disappearing for months before resurfacing when vigilance decreases.”
Stating that comprehensive CCTV coverage across the city is no longer optional but essential, an official said, “The absence of surveillance cameras in key locations throughout the city continues to be a major obstacle in solving such crimes promptly.”
The incident, which occurred around 9.10am on March 12, involved two men on a motorcycle who targeted Sushma Shirodkar while she waited at a bus stop. The thieves escaped before locals could respond to her calls for help.
“CCTV cameras serve dual purposes—they act as a powerful deterrent to potential criminals and provide crucial evidence that helps us identify and apprehend offenders quickly,” the police officer said.
