Pernem to Canacona fast intercity train in 2 years, says Goa CM Sawant

Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Tuesday that state govt would make efforts to start the first Pernem to Canacona intercity fast train in one or two years, along the lines of Vande Bharat trains.

Sawant stated that state govt is making efforts to connect cities through the railway network by reducing the burden on roads. “Goa gets an allocation of Rs 482 crore for Konkan Railway and Southwestern Railway works in Goa, which includes station development, new lines, doubling, and other miscellaneous activities,” he said.

Sawant said that three new railway stations will come up in Goa — Sarzora, Neura, and Mayem. He also said that state govt’s focus is on increasing road transport and reducing traffic on roads.

After the Pernem-Canacona train, “we want to connect cities like Ponda to Panaji”, Sawant said.

“If someone wants to travel from Canacona to Pernem, then he should travel by train. Even if someone from Pernem wants to come to Panaji, he should get down at Karmali railway station. We can start a bus from Karmali to Panaji.”

Sawant said that there is a need for double-tracking in Goa. He also said that he is in continuous touch with the railway minister to strengthen railway infrastructure in Goa.
