Panaji feels heat, yellow alert over Goa extended till today
Panaji: Goa is experiencing a prolonged spell of hot and humid weather, with temperatures soaring above normal levels. As of Mar 13, the state has been under a yellow-coded heat alert for 12 consecutive days (since Mar 2), making this a heatwave-like phenomenon.
On Wednesday, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8°C, but due to high humidity, it felt like 40.8°C, according to the Central India Meteorological Department (IMD). With the relative humidity recorded at 62%, the oppressive weather conditions are expected to continue across the state in the coming days.
In Mormugao, the maximum temperature was 36.6°C, which is 4.8 degrees above the usual seasonal norms. These sweltering conditions have caused discomfort for residents and tourists alike, with the IMD forecast showing no relief from the scorching sun in the coming days.
The IMD has issued a forecast indicating that the weather will remain dry across North and South Goa districts until March 18. Along with the dry conditions, the maximum temperatures are expected to persist between 35-37°C, and the humid air will continue to affect isolated pockets of the state.
The IMD has extended its yellow alert for the state until March 13, advising the public to take precautions against the heat. In the next 24 hours, the IMD forecasts the maximum temperature to hover around 37°C, with the minimum temperature likely to be around 24°C. Residents and visitors are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and wear light, breathable clothing to minimise heat stress.
The IMD’s outlook for the week suggests that maximum temperatures will continue to range from 35 to 37°C for the next seven days.
