Over 60% of cyber crime cases over past five years in Goa have gone undetected
Panaji: Over 60% of cybercrime cases registered over the last five years in the state have remained undetected. During this period, Goa police have registered 441 cyber crime cases, and 170 were detected.
Cyber fraudsters have so far cheated Goans to the tune of Rs 100 crore. Police sources said that this was just the official figure, but the actual amount could be much more.
Police investigations revealed that cyber fraudsters usually operate from abroad, making it difficult to arrest them.
Goa police have urged senior citizens to be more cautious while interacting with unknown people online, as a majority of victims of cyberfraud in Goa are retired persons.
Police said that cyber fraudsters target senior citizens for four reasons. “The first is that senior citizens are not tech-savvy, second, it is easy to manipulate them, third, they have substantial savings in banks, and last, senior citizens never consult anyone while investing online,” police said.
Senior citizens in Goa lost crores of their hard-earned money to cyber fraudsters. Police said that people have to be cautious while investing online and should see where their money is going.
With the rise in cybercrime, state govt prepared a cybercrime awareness action plan that includes a cyber safety and security curriculum in educational institutions from Class VI onwards. A senior official said the draft content will be provided by the police to the directorate of education.
State govt also prepared an action plan towards this end for 13 of its departments, including police, panchayats, PWD, education, and higher education, among others.
