PANAJI: Although 105 police sub-inspectors have been sent for training, their induction into the Goa police force will take some time till their training is over,
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar said on Monday.
Parrikar said that the previous Congress government had failed to fill in vacancies in the police department causing the department to be short-staffed now.
"But even though I have recruited policemen now, I do not have sufficient police personnel as they have to be sent for training," Parrikar said.
Parrikar was speaking against the backdrop of the Porvorim riot by Nigerians on Thursday, November 31, when police were perceived to have acted ham-handedly in controlling the riot. The riot followed a murder of a Nigerian man allegedly due to narcotics turf war between rival gangs.
Parrikar said that the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) of Goa police was heavily compromised during the time of the previous Congress government. Also the home minister, Parrikar said he has virtually replaced the entire ANC and that the new cell had just started gathering fresh intelligence about narcotics trade in the state.
