Ore transport resumes in Piligao after 22-day standoff

Bicholim: After a 22-day halt, iron ore transportation in Piligao resumed on Friday evening, following demands from workers of Vedanta Limited and the truck owners’ association.

They had submitted a memorandum on Friday morning to the Bicholim deputy collector urging him to address alleged obstructions to iron ore transportation. By evening, transportation resumed under police supervision.

Residents of Piligao-Sarmanas had blocked ore transportation, demanding the mining company restore farmland allegedly destroyed by mining.

Locals demanded the reinstatement of local retrenched workers and rejected the company’s proposal despite the intervention of chief minister Pramod Sawant.

Anil Salelkar, a Piligao resident, urged truck operators to drive safely as students cross the main road after school hours.
