One Opa plant shut amid high turbidity

Ponda: Increasing turbidity in the Khandepar river water at Opa Water Works forced the authorities to shut down the 8MLD water treatment plant on Wednesday morning. The plant is expected to resume operations once turbidity decreases.

Seventeen filters were backwashed since Wednesday to ease filtration after clogging led to delays in supply. The staff cleaned three filters at 40MLD plant, one at the 27MLD plant and eight at the 54MLD plant on Wednesday, one of which had to be washed twice. On Thursday, four filters at the 54MLD plant were washed.

Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer at the Curti plant, said turbidity of 230NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit) was recorded on Wednesday morning and 320NTU on Thursday morning. Water containing 1mg of finely divided silica per litre has a turbidity of 1NTU. Up to 50NTU is considered normal. Incessant rain in the catchment areas of the Khandepar and Kalem rivers over the past two days raised the turbidity of water in the Khandepar.
