One more truck sinks into sewerage chamber on Baga-Saunta Vaddo road
Calangute: The sinking sewerage chambers on the Baga-Saunta Vaddo road at Calangute claimed its first ‘victim’ of the peak tourism season when a truck got stuck in a sewerage chamber on Monday morning, raising fears of tourists meeting with accidents during the Christmas-New Year rush. The truck was later removed with earth-moving machinery.
Local stakeholders have been lamenting the sinking of the busy road ever since it was dug up to lay the sewerage network some years ago. A large number of tourists riding two-wheelers have fallen on the road because of the sunken chambers, and some tankers and trucks have also got trapped in the pits.
Following Monday’s incident, Calangute Constituency Forum president Premanand Divkar said, “The road has become a death trap for motorists due to negligence by the officials concerned. We demand a proper enquiry to check the quality of work and initiate action against those responsible.”
While the PWD had carried patchwork repairs of potholes at Calangute recently, the sinking sewerage chambers are going to be repaired only after mid-Jan, according to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo. “We are also laying two water pipelines on both sides of the road under the footpaths. Once the new pipeline is completed, we will hotmix the road,” he said.
