On Kranti din, Kavalekar urges youth to take up agriculture revolution in Goa

MARGAO: Giving a call for ushering in ‘krishi kranti’ (

agriculture revolution

) in the state, deputy chief minister and

agriculture minister Chandrakant Kavlekar

on Thursday urged the

younger generation

to take to the fields with a view to restore Goa’s glory as an agrarian state.


Speaking to reporters after paying tributes at the Ram Manohar Lohia memorial at Lohia Maidan, Margao, on the occasion of

Goa Revolution Day

, Kavlekar said that the sale of paddy seeds have seen a five fold rise this year, thereby indicating a sizeable increase in agriculture cover in the state.

“The younger generation should turn to the fields. If the Covid-19 situation has taught us anything it is this — that one should be self reliant and not dependent on other states for your needs. We can do a lot in the field of agriculture. Providing the necessary infrastructure is among the priorities of this government,” Kavlekar said.

Leader of the

Opposition Digambar Kamat

urged the state to clear all pending job applications of children of freedom fighters within one year. Strongly condemning the arrest of Congress vice president Sankalp Amonkar at Vasco two days ago, Kamat warned that “people’s voice should not be suppressed” and that the constitutional right of every citizen to protest in a democratic way against injustice should be protected.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, expressed his ire over the delay in commencement of work of renovation of the maidan.

“It is a shame that even after Hon Governor @SatyaPalMalik24 visit on 20/1/2020 & directions to administration, work of refurbishment of Lohia Maidan hasn’t commenced !So much brazen hunger for bribes? Spoke now to Hon Governor who expressed his disgust on delay!#GoaRevolutionDay,” he later tweeted.
