PANAJI: Mapusa police have registered a case against Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president Dayanand Narvekar for forging his son’s birth certificate to reduce his age and to ensure that Ganesh Raj would play in the U-15 Goa cricket team. Acting on a complaint filed by Shekhar Salkar, the police on Thursday registered a case against Narvekar under sections 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of IPC.
Salkar told TOI that he had filed the complaint almost two months ago, “As the GCA president had forged documents to ensure that his son would get to play three times in the U-15 category, thereby denying an opportunity to a good, eligible player.” Police sources said the complaint was registered after the director of prosecution opined that the police should register an offence against the Aldona MLA and former law minister.
In his complaint, Salkar has alleged that Narvekar not only forged his son’s birth certificate, but also got him to play in the U-15 Goa cricket team under two different names three times. This, even though BCCI rules state that a player can play U-15 only twice. Salkar further allegedthat Narvekar registered his son’s birth at two places-—Pilerne and Mapusa.
In Pilerne, the birth certificate states that Ganesh Raj Dayanand Narvekar was born on February 28, 1993, the birth registration was done in November 1994, and a live birth report was attached by Dr Chodankar’s hospital stating that Ganesh Raj was born at the hospital. Another birth certificate was registered in January 1995, with the Mapusa municipality, under Ganesh Raj Dayanand Narvekar, and showing the date of birth as February 28, 1993.
However, U-15 category, Salkar’s complaint states that Ganesh Raj played under the said name in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, and as Anish Narvekar in 2007-08. Meanwhile, sources told TOI that Narvekar has already cancelled the birth certificate issued by the Mapusa municipality. When contacted, Mapusa PI Rajesh Kumar said, “We are looking into the matter and can’t divulge any information at the moment.” “I have nothing to comment. Let the police investigate the case,” Narvekar said when contacted. TNN the live birth report attached to it is signed by Ganesh’s mother Sushma Narvekar stating that her son was born at home, Salkar’s complaint states.
It further alleges that Narvekar also had a birth cerficiate issued by the Mapusa municipality which shows Ganesh Raj’s birth year as 1992 instead of 1993. This, Salkar has claimed, was to get Ganesh Raj admissions into school. All this was done when Narvekar was in power as a cabinet minister, Salkar has alleged. As for playing thrice in the U-15 category, Salkar’s complaint states that Ganesh Raj played under the said name in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, and as Anish Narvekar in 2007-08.
