Names of 8k who gave up Indian passports given to electoral office
Panaji: The regional passport office, Panaji, has shared details of 8,459 persons who surrendered their Indian passports after acquiring Portuguese and other nationalities between 2020 and 2025 with the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) in Altinho. CEO Sanjay Goel told reporters that they sought details of those who surrendered their Indian nationality from the RPO, foreigners’ regional registration office, and the home department. “We have already received information from the passport office and FRRO. We expect to receive information from the home department by Monday or Tuesday,” he said.
The information will be sorted out constituency-wise and shared with each electoral registration officer and booth level officer. Many of these persons may reflect on the ASDD (absent shifted dead duplicate) list as absent voters, said Goel. However, in case of those who went ahead and filled enumeration forms despite surrendering their Indian citizenship, they will be issued suo motu notices and given an opportunity to be heard. “The ERO will take a hearing and make a final decision in the matter,” he said.
Goel said the EROs are presently assessing enumeration forms, and the work of scrutiny of the enumeration forms is underway. The draft roll will be published on Dec 16 along with the final list of ASDD voters. This list will be published on the CEO’s website as well as at polling booths, ERO/AERO offices, and websites of district electoral offices, he said. “An aggrieved person may file their claims and objections to the draft roll between Dec 16 and Jan 15,” he said.
Those who want to add their names back on the rolls will have to fill form 6 for new enrollment, he said. Of the total enumeration forms collected, there are 15.4% (1,82,855 voters) whose names have not been mapped with their last SIR details. Notices will be issued to them by the ERO and AERO, which will be delivered by the BLO. They will then have to attend the hearing where they will have to produce one of the 13 documents mentioned at the back of the enumeration form, and the AERO/ERO will then make a final decision. The final electoral roll will be published on Feb 14, he said.
