N Goa road safety panel targets fake helmets, victim aid
Panaji: The North Goa road safety committee convened on Wednesday to address awareness, counterfeit helmets, victim support, and road safety.
The committee discussed the growing issue of fake helmets in Goa and proposed a meeting with ISI helmet manufacturers and the Bureau of Indian Standards to develop an action plan to curb their sales.
The committee plans to enhance road safety awareness for tourists. Plans are in place to discuss with Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd and Manohar International Airport, Mopa, to install safety signage at key transport hubs, including Karmali, Tivim, and Pernem railway stations and Mopa Airport.
The panel also plans to collaborate with animal husbandry and veterinary services (AHVS) to create awareness materials and outline procedures for rescuing and treating animals involved in road accidents.
Another vital proposal discussed was to provide compensation for severely injured road accident victims facing permanent disabilities. The committee proposed that the directorate of transport study the modalities for delivering financial assistance to victims in such cases.
A patrolling vehicle was proposed to clear encroachments along national highways, ensuring free road space and improving traffic flow and safety.
Moreover, the committee announced plans to observe Global Road Safety Week (May 12-17), focusing on pedestrian and cyclist safety.
