Municipality tells mining firm to desilt Bicholim rivulets in 15 days

Bicholim: Officials of the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) have decided to conduct an inspection of the dangerous mining trenches and rivulets that may cause flooding in Bicholim town on June 4.
The council authorities have also instructed Vedanta Mining Company to undertake desilting of all the existing rivulets in Bicholim town within 15 days to prevent flooding and to release water from the mining pits from now onwards instead of releasing it during heavy rains.
A special joint meeting of officials of the Vedanta Mining Company, the Goa State Pollution Control Board, the department of mines and geology and the BMC was held recently in the BMC premises.
However, officials of the mines and geology department did not turn up for the meeting. BMC chairperson Vijaykumar Natekar said that they had informed the officials of the mines and geology department about the scheduled meeting.
Natekar said they will write to the chief minister asking him to find out why the officials of mines and geology department did not attend the meeting.
