Municipal Expansion Fuels Political Ambitions in Margao as 2026 Civic Elections Approach
Margao: With the possibility of an increase in the number of wards of Margao Municipal Council from the current 25 to 27, several aspirants for council membership have pulled up their socks. The civic elections are likely to be held in Oct 2026, but preparations are already under way among potential candidates.
The anticipated expansion comes amid demographic shifts in the municipality over the past five years. New residential constructions in Margao, Fatorda, Borda, and the Housing Board areas have contributed to a substantial population increase, with the number of voters estimated to have grown by 5,000-6,000, bringing the total electorate to approximately 30,000.
“The ward reorganisation reflects our growing urban population,” said a councillor, adding, “Each ward typically accommodates 2,500 to 3,000 voters, so the increase in wards is a natural progression.”
The potential addition of two general wards has created both excitement and uncertainty among aspirants. While some see new opportunities to contest, others who were preparing for specific existing wards now face the possibility of boundary changes affecting their voter base.
Particularly notable is the growth in Margao, where the number of booths increased by two, taking the total to 40. Both Fatorda and Curtorim constituencies, which include portions of Margao municipality jurisdiction, have seen an increase in the number of polling booths by one or two.
Local political analysts note that this early preparation by candidates— more than 18 months before elections— signals heightened political aspirations. “We’re seeing candidates begin community outreach much earlier than previous elections,” said a local political observer. “With potential ward boundary changes, establishing strong community connections now could prove decisive in 2026.”
While the exact ward delimitation is yet to be officially announced, the municipal administration is expected to finalise the new boundaries by early 2026, giving candidates adequate time to adjust their campaign strategies well ahead of the polls.
