Mormugao council to dismantle gates at Baina flyover

Vasco: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has resolved to demolish the metal gates erected at the entry and exit points of the up-and-down ramp at Baina.
Councillor Deepak Naik and others had raised strong concern over Mormugao Port Authority’s ‘monopoly’ over the flyover, which they said was meant to serve motorists. They had said that the flyover would lower the flow of heavy vehicular traffic from the town’s roads, thereby minimising accidents.
The ramp was also meant to ease the traffic movement from Baina, they had said. However, Naik had said, people were forced to agitate because of the restrictions on the use of the flyover.
He had demanded that the municipal chairperson and the chief officer act against MPA. “Despite the assurance made by chief minister Pramod Sawant to give free access to the ramp, MPA failed to keep its word,” Naik had alleged. Eventually, the council resolved to demolish the metal gates to the ramp towards Baina.
The new sticking point for the council is Goa Shipyard Limited’s road touching a wall. The councillors have decided to act against the defence ship construction yard, setting an example to others.
