More than 300 stray dogs sterilised, vaxxed along Salcete coast in 12 days
Colva: In a community-driven initiative, over 300 stray dogs along Salcete’s scenic coastline have been sterilised and vaccinated in just 12 days as part of a campaign launched on April 1.
The 19-day initiative, spearheaded by Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) in collaboration with Mission Rabies and the Goa animal husbandry department, aims to not only reduce the stray dog population but also maintain the region’s image as a safe and welcoming destination for tourists.
Dr Stacy Sequeira, director of WVS, said that the team has already covered key beaches like Cavelossim, Carmona, Varca, Benaulim, and Colva and is now working through Betalbatim and Majorda. “Given the vast stretch of the coastline and logistical challenges, we’re working closely with local dog feeders who know these animals well. Their support has been critical in helping us efficiently locate and catch the dogs,” she explained.
If time permits, the team plans a second sweep starting again from Cavelossim before the campaign concludes on April 19.
The urgency of the programme was catalysed by a recent spike in dog bite incidents, raising concern among local panchayats, shack owners, and the hospitality industry. With the summer tourism season approaching, stakeholders called on authorities to implement sustainable measures.
“This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about co-existence,” said a local shack owner at Majorda. “By managing the stray population humanely, we’re making the beaches safer for everyone—locals, tourists, and the animals.”
The campaign is part of a long-term strategy focused on population control, vaccination against rabies, and strengthening the human-animal bond across Goa’s beach communities, said Dr Murugan Appupillai.
