Moira case: Three held for attacking pregnant woman

Panaji: Police have arrested three over an assault on a man and his pregnant wife at Moira. The couple were attacked by a gang after a minor parking dispute.

Ranganath Shetye, 55, Vinod Shetkar, 47, and Kaushal Tulshidas Shetye, 32, all from Tambdi Matti, Moira, in Bardez, have been arrested. They have been remanded in five-day police custody.

Two vehicles belonging to Tulshidas and Kartik Shetye, another accused in the case, which were allegedly used during the commission of the crime, have been attached by Mapusa police, said North Goa SP Rahul Gupta.

The pregnant woman and her husband, a food cart owner, were assaulted on Monday. Police said that an argument began over parking, which escalated into assault.

The parking row occurred during the day. Later that evening, the son of one of the men who had confronted the couple approached the food cart owner.

The couple were abused and in the heat of the moment, the food cart owner responded in similar language.

The man who was accosting the couple then summoned his friends to launch the attack. “I told them I am pregnant, yet they held my hair and pulled me back,” the woman said.
