Panaji: Agriculture in the coastal region is being impacted by natural forces apart from the anthropogenic pressures of coastal development, domestic and industrial pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, habitat destruction, and unsustainable tourism.
The Association for Coastal Agricultural Research (ACAR) has invited applicants to participate in a discussion on this topic at the National symposium on self-reliant coastal agriculture to be organised by ICAR - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Old Goa, from May 11-13.
“The coastal ecosystem is one of the most diverse and dynamic biotopes on earth’s surface. The ecosystem is also subjected to natural disasters such as cyclones, landslides, rise in sea-level and coastal sedimentation and erosion. Therefore, agriculture in the coastal region is inadequate to meet the high demographic pressure due to low productivity of the yield and horticultural crops, livestock and over-exploitation of the fishery resources,” the institute said.
The symposium is expected to serve as a platform for researchers, academicians, farmers stakeholders, and policy makers to have in-depth deliberations and prepare a roadmap for self-reliance and sustainability in coastal agriculture.
It will also offer participating companies an unique opportunity to acquaint delegates with their mission, products/services, technology, and career opportunities.
