Margao police crack down on motor vehicle violations
Margao: The Margao police have intensified their efforts to curb traffic violations in the town, following several complaints from residents about increasing noise pollution and unauthorised vehicle modifications.
In a drive on Friday, led by PI Suraj Samant, several vehicles were seized for various violations.
During routine patrolling, the police discovered two rent-a-bikes illegally parked on footpaths, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians, particularly elderly citizens and children. They were operating without valid fitness certificates, raising serious safety concerns.
“The unauthorised parking of these rental vehicles has become a persistent problem in Margao’s busy streets, forcing pedestrians to walk on the main road and risk their lives,” said a shopkeeper.
In the same drive, two motorcycles were impounded for having modified silencers and missing number plates. These modified silencers have been a source of considerable disturbance for residents, especially during late hours.
“The thunderous noise from these modified bikes has been disrupting our peace. It’s particularly problematic for students trying to study and elderly people who need rest,” said Maria D’Souza, a resident of Malbhat. “The noise can be heard from far away.”
The police initiated legal proceedings against all violators under the Motor Vehicles Act. PI Samant emphasised that this drive was part of a larger campaign to restore order on Margao’s streets. “Strict action will continue against violators,” he said.
Local civic activists have welcomed this initiative but suggest that more regular enforcement is needed. “While this action is commendable, we need consistent monitoring to prevent such violations from recurring,” a local civic activist said.
