Despite awareness campaigns on helmet use, many riders—particularly youth—ignore safety regulations. This non-compliance prompted police to step up enforcement.

“We have observed a concerning trend of traffic rule violations, especially regarding helmet usage,” said a senior traffic police officer. “The enforcement drive aims to ensure road safety and reduce potential fatalities in accidents.”

Enforcement actions surged from 24 cases and Rs 1 lakh in fines in Jan to nearly 500 violations and Rs 5 lakh in penalties in Feb.

Under the revised traffic laws, riding without a helmet is fined Rs 1,000. Traffic officials said the enforcement drive will be strict in the coming months. Health authorities supported the police initiative, highlighting that proper helmet use reduces the risk of fatal head injuries by up to 40%.
