Margao cops arrest 3 for 72 lakh heist

Margao: The Margao town police arrested three individuals from West Bengal in connection with a major gold theft case involving approximately 959g of the precious metal valued at Rs 72 lakh, from a jewellery-making workshop in Comba, Margao.

The accused, identified as Suprokash Mandal, 29, Sanjoy Mondal, 22, and Tapas Jana, 44, were employed at the workshop owned by Pritesh Lotlikar. The theft occurred between 10.45pm on Nov 29 and 9.30am on Nov 30.

Following a complaint filed by Lotlikar, the Margao town police formed special teams for investigation. A team led by PSI Sameer Gaonkar, along with other officers, was dispatched to West Bengal. Through technical and electronic surveillance, the accused were traced to the Phultala area in North 24 Parganas, Kolkata.

Working in coordination with the Habra police station, the Goa police team apprehended the suspects on Dec 3. During the operation, police recovered gold ornaments valued at Rs 14.9 lakh.

After obtaining a transit warrant, the accused were brought to Goa on Thursday and remanded in eight days police custody by the Margao JMFC.
