Mapusa vendors raise concerns about unfair sopo charges
Panaji: Vegetable vendors operating at the Mapusa municipal market’s shed have raised concerns about being charged sopo fees even for days when they are unable to conduct business at the shed. They said that Rs 80 per metre is being charged by the contractor appointed by the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
“When we skip a day at the market, the following day, the sopo collector demands payment for both days, effectively charging double the usual amount,” one of the vendors said.
The vendors, mainly elderly women from the farming community of Mapusa and nearby areas, have requested the municipality to waive sopo charges for days when they are unable to conduct business at the market.
Another vendor said, “After receiving our designated spot in the market shed, the MMC gave strict instructions against relocating elsewhere. Our business suffers due to limited footfall, as people prefer purchasing vegetables from unauthorised sellers who operate along streets and pavements and areas near the bus stand.”
The MMC’s alleged negligence towards the market shed was also highlighted by the vendors, as one of them pointed out the irregular cleaning schedule and non-functional electrical equipment, including fans. The vendors urged the MMC to look into their concerns and implement measures to provide them with necessary assistance.
A senior MMC official said that the municipality administration will look into the grievances of the vendors and take appropriate steps to address the same.
