Mapusa traders reopen shops after arrears halted

Mapusa: After merchants shut shops in Mapusa market on Wednesday to protest rent arrears collection, the municipality put its plan on hold, leading to reopening of shops.

“We will not collect arrears until govt takes a final decision. Matters of rent arrears collection and renewal of trade licence are before the CM,” said Chandrakant Shetkar, chief officer of Mapusa Municipal Council.

“I advise you not to pay arrears until CM’s directive. You may start paying and apply for licence renewals accordingly,” he added.

Earlier, the market wore a deserted look as shops remained closed despite efforts by urban development minister Vishwajit Rane to pacify traders. He ordered disciplinary action against the chief officer for creating confusion and not following govt orders, and assured traders of a resolution within 15 days.

“We have been forced to keep our businesses closed today. We need a written assurance from authorities that our issues will be resolved,” said Jitendra Falari, president of Mapusa Merchants’ Association.

Traders also demanded repairs to drainage and wiring, better sanitation, easier licence renewal, and removal of the mall from the bus stand project.
