Man accused of gold, cash theft held in Punjab

Panaji: Raju Sonar, 36, against whom the Pernem police registered a theft case on Nov 21, was arrested in Punjab to where he had fled after stealing gold and currency notes worth Rs 23.4 lakh. Rutvik Vilas Pandurkar, 22, a goldsmith from Nagzar, complained that between Sep and Nov, Sonar — a gold artisan — was entrusted with old gold ornaments worth Rs 18.2 lakh and Rs 5.2 lakh in cash by Pandurkar and others to prepare new jewellery. But Sonar had misappropriated these for personal use, the complainant stated.

When Sonar was not found at his residence in Dhargal, he was traced at Purowal Jattan in Punjab with assistance from Sadar police station. He was then brought to Goa and arrested on Wednesday.
