“I am confident that these centres will play a pivotal role in strengthening the sports culture of Goa and nurturing champions at the state, national, and international levels in the years to come,” said Sawant.
Goa has a Khelo India state centre in Panaji and two Khelo India district centres in Mapusa and Margao, all funded by the central govt, which cater to separate disciplines like swimming, table tennis, badminton, hockey and football.
Developed by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs (DSYA) on the lines of the Khelo India centres, the Ponda will train 30 students each in kabaddi and archery, while the Sanquelim centre will have volleyball and kabaddi.
“Training will be on a day-boarding basis where DSYA will provide diet, kit and equipment. There will be training for 78 days till April. This is a pilot project by the chief minister who had made a budget assurance. The plan is to launch more centres during the next financial year,” said a senior official.
