In Pernem, two artists use sustainable materials to take on PoP Ganesh idols

Mapusa: Although they are environmentally damaging, many families are opting for plaster of paris (PoP) idols because they are lightweight and easy to carry. However, two artists from Mandrem, Pernem, have come up with an innovative alternative.

Crafted from sustainable materials, the families of Sanil Parsekar and Saish Shetmandrekar have made Ganesh idols that are not only lightweight, but also environmentally friendly.

“Our idols are made from a unique mix. Discarded papers are soaked, mashed, and ground with clay and resin. The mix is then used as raw material to mould Ganesh idols,” said Parsekar.

Traditionally, Goan artists used local clay to craft idols, but around two decades ago, some switched over to PoP. Over time, the damaging effect of PoP on the environment became known, resulting in the subsequent ban on the sale of PoP idols by Goa govt. However, traders import them from neighbouring states discreetly.
Idols made from the fresh mix, Parsekar said, are not only as light as PoP idols but also better than those made from local clay. “They look completely natural and are fully degradable in water with zero chances of water contamination,” he said.

Since all the materials used are easily available, the cost of making is low too, Parsekar said, adding that artists shouldn’t find it difficult to make the switch.

He said that the new clay mix offers artists the same scope as that of PoP in crafting finer details of an idol.

The Parsekar and Shetmandrekar families want more artists to adopt their innovative use of sustainable materials in making Ganesh idols.
