In Mormugao, reflector belts for stray cattle to prevent mishaps

Panaji: With a special mission to prevent road accidents and protect stray cattle, Good Samaritans from various parts of Mormugao taluka joined hands to put reflector belts on stray cattle within the taluka to alert motorists of the presence of the animals at night. The cattle were also fed leafy vegetables.

“The fast movement of heavy vehicles on the highway has resulted in a few accidents in the taluka, motivating us to ensure that there’s better visibility of these animals on roads. There is, however, a need for an animal shelter in the taluka along with grazing facilities so that they do not stray into areas with dense vehicular traffic,” one of the group members said.

The group members said that injured cattle were shifted to a gaushala and treated there. However, awareness about the injured cattle is a must.

“The animals are voiceless and therefore often their injuries go unnoticed. Even simple application of turmeric powder can help heal small wounds. There should be a dedicated space for the animals so that they do not become victims of road accidents,” the members said.
