‘Home guards are unsung heroes in society’s safety’

Panaji: Director general of police (DGP) Alok Kumar on Friday said home guards are “unsung heroes” who serve as society’s guardians, working tirelessly in the background to maintain order, particularly during challenging times. He said that their valuable service deserves proper acknowledgment through rewards.

Kumar said that he observed that reward lists exclude home guards despite their contributions. “Many home guards render valuable service in the police station, traffic circle and many times during nakabandi or festivals. If they are doing a good job, then along with the police personnel, rewards for home guards should also be put up,” Kumar said at a function organised at police headquarters to commemorate the annual raising day of home guards and civil defence organisations.

He said that the home guards is not just a title, it is a symbol of commitment, bravery and selflessness.

“From assisting police during emergencies to providing support in times of natural calamity, the role of home guards is indispensable.” The DGP said that the home guards force grew and evolved into a highly effective and trained unit. “The commitment and courage demonstrated by home guards are nothing short of exceptional. They dedicate themselves to maintaining public order, responding in disaster, assisting in civil defence, and even contributing to community-building initiatives.” Kumar said that the total sanctioned strength of home guards in Goa is 1,500, and the present strength is 1,230. Out of the present strength, 1,230 home guards, 945 are male, and 285 are female. Out of 270 vacant posts, 143 posts of home guard volunteers are under the process of enrollment.

The DGP said govt has kept a 10% reservation for home guards for the post of police constable and also 10% vacancies of excise guards, jail guards, firemen and forest guards.
