Hinterland key to sustainable tourism: MLA of Sanvordem

Margao: Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar emphasised the importance of promoting hinterland tourism while speaking at the inaugural event of Dudhsagar Festavista, a cultural programme at Collem. The event, organised with govt support, aims to boost tourist footfall in the Sanvordem constituency.

“After discussing with chief minister Pramod Sawant and tourism minister Rohan Khaunte, we decided to extend tourism beyond beaches,” said Gaonkar, who heads the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC).

The initiative focuses on promoting local attractions, including Dudhsagar falls, Tambdi Surla temple, and the biodiversity park at Mollem, while emphasising sustainable development and environmental preservation. Gaonkar stressed the importance of maintaining these sites and marketing them effectively to attract tourists to local homestays.

“We need to have sustainable development so that nature and environment are preserved for posterity,” he said.

This latest development aligns with Gaonkar’s earlier announcement in Feb 2022, where he outlined plans to develop all temples in his constituency for tourism over three years. The ongoing projects include the Tambdi Surla-Dudhsagar tourism circuit.
