Heavy rain wreaks havoc at Canacona

Canacona: Heavy rain battered fields, roads, and homes at Canacona. On Thursday, water entered the house of Ulhas Komarpant near Ravindra Bhavan, Chaudi.

Chaudi councillor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar said that the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) contractor hired to construct the Ravindra Bhavan failed to provide a proper culvert to divert water into nearby fields.

Gaonkar said that the gutter between Komarpant’s house and Ravindra Bhavan was inadequate for drainage and got clogged with plastic waste and silt.

He hired an earthmover to divert the water into the fields, preventing further damage. He told TOI the GSIDC contractor failed to build a proper culvert, and the council has to deal with the consequences.

Meanwhile, Canacona fire services attended two calls on Wednesday, one at Ourem, Palolem and another at Talpona.

The first call reported a coconut tree crashing on the restaurant belonging to Salvador Pereira, causing Rs 20,000 in losses. The second call involved a coconut tree falling near Ramesh Pagi’s property, with minimal damage. Firefighter Chandrahas Pagi said they saved property worth Rs 50,000 in the first case and Rs 15,000 in the second. Pagi said firemen also cleared trees from the national highway and interior roads.
