Eight councillors of the 12-member body supported the motion. Mascarenhas and Premjit Dessai were absent from the meeting, while Shashank Dessai and Udesh Gaonkar abstained from voting.

Angela Luis, Panzy Coutinho, Polita Carniero, Virendra Dessai, Kiran Naik, Succorina Coutinho,

and Ashok Fadte were the signatories to the motion against the chairperson.

Mascarenhas’ detractors have accused her of failing to taking all councillors into confidence over various issues, for failing to bring about development in the town, and for failing to put in place any effective solid waste management plan.

Luis has been tipped to be the next chairperson, with all the eight councillors likely to support her candidature. They have come together under the banner of Cuncolim Citizens’ Panel, which comprises members of different political hues.
