GU introduces MSc in atmospheric science
Panaji: As changing climate patterns are giving rise to global demand for skilled professionals in climate and weather systems, Goa University is introducing a specialised two-year MSc programme in Atmospheric Science.
26 seats will be offered initially for the programme at Goa University’s School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (SEOAS)
The curriculum is designed to provide students with both scientific knowledge and technical skills necessary for accurate forecasting, climate analysis, and disaster preparedness, said GU officials.
“The programme is closely aligned with national and international priorities in environmental monitoring and resilience, via the incorporation of recent advances in satellite technology, data science, and numerical modelling. The programme will deliver a balanced educational experience, combining rigorous theoretical knowledge with extensive practical training,” an official told TOI.
Students enrolled in the programme will acquire expertise in atmospheric physics, climate science, and weather prediction and the curriculum ensures exposure to satellite data, meteorological instruments, and advanced analytical tools.
There are already on-campus facilities available for the programme such as the Aerosol Observatory and Meteorological Tower, supported by the ISRO-Space Physics Laboratory. “These resources enable students to engage directly with real-time atmospheric observations. Goa’s distinctive coastal environment offers opportunities for in-depth study of real-time atmospheric phenomena, including monsoon dynamics and air-sea interactions. Collaborations with premier scientific institutions, include ISRO, INCOIS, and IITM (Pune),” the official said.
On completing the programme, students will get a diverse variety of career opportunities in meteorology, climate consultancy, air quality management, research, and disaster management.
“The programme prepares graduates to address urgent environmental challenges, ensuring their readiness for impactful roles in the field,” said the official.
