Govt paid Rs4.3cr to families of accident victims in 4.5 years

Panaji: Between 2019 and 2024 (till June) , 261 applications were processed under the state’s compensation schemes, with families of victims who died or were disabled receiving Rs 2,00,000 each.

In total, Rs 4.3 crore has been paid since 2019 as part of the Goa State Compensation to Road Accident Victims, 2023, which provides financial assistance to the families of road accident victims.

The scheme has seen a steady increase in the number of applications each year. In 2019, 30 victims were compensated and one was rejected, followed by 34 sanctions in 2020 and four rejections, 51 sanctions in 2021 and 3 rejections, 32 sanctions in 2022 and 3 rejections, and 68 sanctions and 13 rejections in 2023. As of June 2024, 20 applications are currently under process, of which 2 have already been rejected. Additionally, there have been two self-injury cases, one compensated with Rs 50,000 in 2021 and another with Rs 10,000 in 2022.

The scheme titled Goa State Compensation to Road Accident Victims, 2023 was notified on Feb 10, 2024. Alongside this, the central government’s “Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022,” provides additional support for victims who are unable to claim compensation from the responsible parties.
