Goa’s watermelon sales soar amid scorching heat

Panaji: With soaring temperatures and heatwave-like conditions, the demand for a refreshing treat is rising. Watermelon farmers in Goa are experiencing a boom in sales this summer, with demand surging by 20% compared to last year. Many consumers are turning to watermelon as a hydrating and sweet relief from the sweltering temperatures.

“There was a massive demand for watermelons after its harvest, and we managed to sell everything at retail rates,” said Varad Samant, a Dharbandora farmer. “Every year we sell watermelons at Ponda market, but this year, the fruits were sold directly from the farm within 15 days,” he told TOI.

Watermelon is good for hydration as it is rich in water, vitamins A and C, potassium, and magnesium. While watermelons from neighbouring states are available, Goa’s home-grown varieties, Akira, Sugar Baby, Augusta, and Nelson, have distinct sweetness, water content, and bite crispiness.

Watermelon cultivation in Goa involves a 60-day growing cycle. Seeds are sown between Dec and Jan and harvested in March-April. Drip irrigation ensures optimal water usage and crop health.

“The intense heat of this year's summer has accelerated the turnover, with an increase in both volume and price,” said Akshay Pukhre, a farmer from Parra. “We have not even completed the harvesting process yet, but orders are pouring in non-stop. There is a 20-30 percent increase in sales this year, which is a huge boost for local farmers,” he said.

In Anjuna, farmer Gasper Fernandes is seeing similar success. “My watermelons have reached every house in the village of Anjuna. We are therefore self-sufficient within the village,” he said. Fernandes, who has developed a loyal customer base in his community, has also found fans of his crops from neighbouring villages. “There is a confidence in knowing your farmer and what goes into growing your food,” he said. Fernandes is now urging more farmers to grow watermelons, citing strong profits.
