It has been only 11 days since the monsoon advanced towards Goa, but

Persistent rainfall over the past few days has meant that the state's seasonal total is already close to the 50-inch mark. The state recorded 47.87 inches of seasonal total till Wednesday.

After Goa experienced incessant rain for close to a week, locals are likely to get some respite over the next few days with only ‘isolated' rainfall predicted by the meteorology department.

On Wednesday, Pernem and

Ponda

rain gauges measured ‘very heavy rainfall' with 14 and 12 cm of rainfall recorded in the areas. Based on the Met department's parameters, all areas in Goa received ‘heavy rainfall' on Wednesday with over 7cm registered across the state.

While

Mapusa

received 11cm of rainfall, Mormugao recorded 10cm. Panaji, Old Goa, Sakhali and

Dabolim

received 9cm of rainfall. Valpoi, Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem, on the other hand, received 7cm of rainfall.

The intermittent rainfall during the last few days is because of the strong southwesterly winds. The upper air cyclonic circulation over the west central

Bay of Bengal

off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast extending between 3.6km and 9.5km above mean sea level had triggered the wet spell.

The temperature also dropped to three degrees below normal to 22.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
