Goa’s growth must be rooted in sustainability: PM
Panaji: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said Goa has the potential to become a global model for sustainable, innovation-led growth, clean energy, marine economy, cultural preservation and quality of life. On Goa’s Statehood Day, the PM also highlighted significant growth prospects in the sports sector.
In a three-page letter to chief minister Pramod Sawant, Modi asked the CM to strengthen the roadmap for a Viksit Goa, , which will play an important role in building Viksit Bharat by 2047.
“I am confident that the state has the potential to emerge as a global model for sustainable, innovation-led growth, clean energy, marine economy, cultural preservation and quality of life,” the PM wrote.
He said that the coming times present immense opportunities for Goa, with scope to expand eco-tourism, blue economy initiatives, digital innovation, startup ecosystems, skill development, wellness tourism and green infrastructure.
“Goa’s youths possess immense talent and creativity and they can become key drivers of India’s growth story in the years ahead. At the same time, preserving Goa’s ecological balance and cultural identity will always remain at the core of all our development efforts. Goa’s growth must continue to be rooted in sustainability and sensitivity towards local communities,” Modi said.
Stating that one area in which he sees significant potential for growth is sports, Modi recalled Goa’s trademark hospitality was on full display when it hosted the 37th National Games in 2023.
“I also came to Goa for its opening. A few months ago, Goa hosted an Ironman event too, which witnessed commendable youth participation. We are giving great importance to beach games, again an area where Goa can be a leader,” the PM said.
Modi said that he is confident that Goa will continue to achieve new milestones of progress and innovation. The people of Goa have always demonstrated a spirit of excellence. Their strengths will continue to guide the state towards an even brighter future.
The Prime Minister said over the years, significant support has been extended across sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, housing, tourism, education, women empowerment and livelihoods.
“Major infrastructure initiatives have also received support from the Centre. In the last year itself, projects worth more than Rs 10,000 crore have been sanctioned for Goa, including highways, tourism infrastructure, irrigation systems, higher education and urban development,” Modi said.
