Goa police registered 10 crime cases per day in 2025
Panaji: On average, Goa police registered 10 crime cases in the state per day in 2025, including murder, rape, dacoity, robbery, narcotic cases and theft, among others.
A total of 3,243 criminal cases were registered in the state, and 2,876 cases were detected, which was an 88% detection rate.
Interestingly, over the last five years, the detection rate of Goa police remained consistently between 85% and 88%, and the registration of cases remained steady at a little above 3,100 cases.
Since 2021, 153 murders were reported in the state, and 141 murders were detected by police. Similarly, 455 rape cases were reported in the state, and 441 rape cases were detected.
During the same period, a total of 13 dacoities were registered in Goa, and police claimed that all were detected. Three dacoities occurred during the last year, including in Mapusa, Dona Paula and Baina. Except for one case in Baina, the main accused in Dona Paula and Mapusa remained untraced.
Though the facilitators in two cases were arrested, the main accused, suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals, were still at large.
The modus operandi adopted in all the above cases was similar.
In Baina, around seven masked men entered a house, assaulted the occupants and decamped with silver and cash. It was not the first incident of this kind.
In April, an elderly couple from the Dempo family endured a traumatic experience when three armed robbers with daggers broke into their residence at Dona Paula.
The trio tied the 77-year-old and his 71-year-old wife to their bed while carrying out the burglary between 12am and 4am.
The trio entered the bungalow after assaulting the security guard. Upon entering the house, they first tied Padmini to the bed and then Jaiprakash. Jaiprakash recalled opening his eyes and seeing 3 people standing in front of him.
In the first case, only the senior citizens were in the house at the time. Nearly six months after the alleged dacoity took place at Dona Paula, Goa police arrested a person involved in identifying the house.
Similarly, around six armed, burqa-clad individuals stole approximately Rs 35 lakh in cash and valuables and held the Ghanekar family hostage at Mapusa, following a meticulously planned escape route. The crime was committed at the house of Ghanekar in the town’s densely populated Ganeshpuri area between 3am and 5am.
The gang, that came in with a large knife and iron rods, feasted on food available at the house and then got the doctor’s elderly mother to make them tea.
The family members, the doctor, his wife, his mother, and another relative — were tied using bedsheets and a sari and then gagged using pillow covers.
