PANAJI: Demanding hike in their salaries, Government employees in Goa on Saturday went on an indefinite 'pen down' strike as the administration initiated talks to end the stir. Chief Minister Digamber Kamat decided to hold a fresh round of talks on Sunday with the representatives of the Goa Government Employees Association (GGEA), spearheading the agitation.
Functioning in the government offices was paralysed as employees, excluding officers, stayed away from work though they were present in their respective offices. The employees have sought written assurance from the government to hike their pay failing which, they said, the strike would continue.
Acting Chief Secretary Vikas Anand, briefing media persons this evening, hinted at government curtailing the superannuation age of employees from 60 to 58 years to curb expenditure. "We are examining reducing the superannuation age," he said. The Government is reluctant to go in for upgradation of pay scales, as according to sources, it would amount to additional liability of Rs 100 crore on the state exchequer. Anand said the Government is awaiting the Centre's next move on the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, which has already submitted its report.
