GMC to launch skull-base surgery unit

Panaji: GMC is set to launch an endoscopic skull-base surgery unit as a centre of excellence by the end of Jan or early Feb. GMC dean S M Bandekar said on Monday that health minister Vishwajit Rane approved the unit in the super-speciality block of GMC and added that govt approved Rs 10 crore to procure the required medical equipment.

He said that the unit will function under the department of neurosurgery and the department of ear, nose, and throat (ENT). It will be led by consultant ENT surgeon at Bombay Hospital, Nishit Shah, and H N Reliance Mumbai, alongside head of the neurosurgery department at GMC, Ponraj Sundaram

“Skull-base surgery is required for most of the patients who have pituitary-related and other complex diseases. It is important for patients who cannot afford to travel to Mumbai for treatment,” Bandekar said. He noted that this surgery, which costs nearly Rs 10 lakh, will be offered free of cost at GMC.
