Ganjem drowning: Body of second sportsman found
Ponda: Naval divers recovered the body of an 18-year-old sportsman who drowned in the Mhadei river at Ganjem, Ponda, after extensive search operations by fire and emergency services personnel. The victim, Dhananjay Bhanudas Khairnar from Dhule Maharashtra, was found Monday evening following the Sunday afternoon incident.
The drowning occurred when seven sportsmen from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex at Curti went swimming near a bandhara in Ganjem, 7km from their camping site. While villagers managed to rescue two youths, two others went missing.
Ponda police initiated a search operation with support from locals and fire emergency services. The Navy was called in on Monday afternoon to assist with the recovery efforts. Sushil Moraskar, station officer of Ponda central fire station, said that his staff have limitations and so the Navy was roped in.
