Flyover risk to centuries-old banyan stokes Porvorim ire
Panaji: Green advocates, political activists, and Porvorim residents assembled on Saturday to call for the protection of an ancient banyan tree, which faces a potential threat from the construction of a flyover.
The construction is part of the elevated highway corridor project at Porvorim.
The group staged a protest against govt on the site. The protesters said infrastructure projects should incorporate existing trees into their plans rather than removing them.
The protesters’ demands include a modified flyover design that would ensure tree preservation, particularly focusing on protecting the centuries-old banyan tree situated along National Highway 66.
Goa Green Brigade convener Avertino Miranda said the banyan tree functions as a crucial habitat for butterflies, insects, and microscopic organisms while providing shade and oxygen. He said the tree is vital to the local ecosystem.
Political activist Cecille Rodrigues urged officials to acknowledge public sentiments about the banyan tree, highlighting its religious significance to worshippers. She emphasised the tree’s dual importance as both a sacred site and a source of oxygen for the community.
