FIRs filed over assaults, cops among victims

Margao: Quepem police have registered two separate FIRs against Joyson Fernandes of Cacora, Curchorem, and five to six other individuals following a series of assaults, including an attack on police personnel in the early hours of Thursday.
According to the first complaint filed by Bryan Costa of Xeldem, the accused persons formed an unlawful assembly at Shivnagar, Xeldem, around 2.30am and assaulted him and his friend Felix Fernandes without any provocation, causing minor injuries.
In a more serious turn of events, the second FIR was filed based on a complaint by ASI Pundalik Gaonkar about an attack on police personnel on duty. The same group of accused allegedly obstructed Gaonkar while he was performing his official duties around 3.10am when he visited the place following the complaint about the earlier assault.
The accused allegedly slapped police constable Rohan Narvekar, who was accompanying Gaonkar. The assailants then fled in a two-wheeler and a four-wheeler.
Police are on the lookout for the accused. State Congress president Amit Patkar condemned the attacks, highlighting the assault on police personnel.
In a social media post, Patkar criticised the law-and-order situation under BJP govt, questioning how people could trust police when such assaults go unchecked.
